What To Do When The Fish Are Finicky February 10, 2010

10 02 2010

Hello there  fellow fishermen and women

How is it going out there, are you finding plenty to do with all this weather going on around you?  The waters been roiled up for a few weeks now. What have you found to do with yourself ?  I’ve tied a lot of flies with all this spare time. I,ve been tying a lot of  clousers. So many that I ran out of hooks and eyes. I’m waiting for hooks I ordered from Hook and Hackle to arrive so I can continue tying more flies. I went to Michael’s fabric store for feathers, thread, sticky back foam, and glue with glitter. I want to try to see if these materials will work on flies and if they will last in the water. I will let you know how it works out but who knows when that will be.

Well until then …see ya!

Only The Shadow Knows- Feburary 2, 2010

2 02 2010

Today is February 2,2010 and the rodent form the east coast says that there will be six more weeks of winter yet to come. Better keep your umbrellas handy for a few more sprinkles. I prefer the rain over 102 degrees any day but it’s not too good for fishing in. We can’t do anything about it so you might as well enjoy it while you can. I was thinking about some sturgeon fishing lately but haven’t got around to it yet. I was hoping to get a round to it yet for a Christmas present ,ar ar ar ,a little humor there:)
Ok now for something that’s a little less painful. I was surfing the web and came across Gene Buckholz site and read his fishing report for our area today.Gene Buchholz <info@hookproshop.com>

Sturgeon is the hot bite now and small stripers are around Franks Tract if you could find them. Your better off with bait so they can  find your hook. The same goes for Black Bass they are on the lam in this muddy water that is coming down river. I haven’t been out lately , just been tying some flys and I’m running out of supplies again. I also have time to get my boat ready for the spring run. Also waiting for the water to clear and for some of the rip rap to float down river. When your out on the water be aware of large pieces of drifting materials floating on the water this time of year. What may look  like a twig above water could be a tree under water.i bet that would put a damper on your day if you hit that at any speed. Be safe out there and have fun.

   Well until then, See Ya!

One Down Eleven To Go January 31, 2010

31 01 2010

Well another January has gone by and what a wet one.I thought it would never stop raining. After the rain came the fog and dank weather. Today is saturday and the sun is out once again only a slight chance of rain in the forecast for a few days. Not much fishing  so I spent time tying flies and reading posts on the Dan Blanton site to see what every one was doing.I found that a lot of talking was going on and that was about it. A lot of guys were talking about steel head and blown out rivers. While surfing the web I found Kienes Fly SHOP in the Sacramento area has a pretty good web site, it has a very good variety of topics to search for the type of fish you want to target. Plus it has a store for all your fly fishing needs. Check it out when you got some down time.

Went to check on the river by the house and it is nice and muddy, should  be good for sturgeon. There was a lot of stuff floating out there too. I went by the boat launch at Lauritzen’s and there were a few boats  out. I went inside and inquired about them and found that there was a tournament this weekend so they gotta be pre fishing, good luck .I also found out that there is a Show coming up in February at the Pleasanton Fairgrounds  here are the details and the cost below. I will try to make it there.

MUDDY WATERS ON THE DELTA JANUARY 24, 2010

24 01 2010

Well today is another overcast day in the Sacramento Delta area of Antioch Ca. What a way to start the week with rain in the forecast again, when are we going to get a break?
I went to Lauritsens and checked on the water-color and it was chocolatte kinda like the coffee. The tide was high and starting to go out. There was about five or six boat trailers parked in the lot so there are some optimistic fishers out there I wish them the best. Guess I will try again tomorrow and see what happens. This is good sturgeon water now with the roiled up water and hopefully good tides also. Maybe I’ll try my luck at a sturgeon, better than staying inside all day. Just have to worry about Tornados in the Brentwood ,Oakley and Discovery Bay area, wierd huh?

Well untill then tight line and SEE YA!

The Rain Continues On And On And On January 22, 2010

22 01 2010

When will the rain stop you ask? I really don’t know to tell you the truth. I’m just praying that the water stays pretty much clear. Usually after this much rain the delta is a wash out. It will take about three days of no rain to clear up to fishable clarity. I went on Dan Blanton’s  site ,a well-known fly fisherman and guide, and some one asked if the water clarity was still fishable and he was directed to CDEC,[ California Data Exchange Center] site, go to river conditions and look up the Sacramento River and it will give you the average water clarity for the month of  january 2010 or all of 2009.The higher the number the dirtier the water. It also gives you water temps, flows and oxygen levels for the water you’re interested in fishing. Not bad for free.

That took me a while to figure out but being a fisherman I did it. I’ve pasted the page below so you can have a look-see at it. Hope this is useful to you, untill then  see ya.

Today is Monday and it’s Raining and Windy, January 18, 2010

18 01 2010

Well it’s monday morning and the prognosticators are calling for wet and windy conditions all around the bay area for the week. How can a man go fishing in this stuff? If it’s not the cold it’s the heat or the wind or the rain or some unforeseen thing that pops up. The delta will be blown out for a few days after this storm so I’ll try again .

While perusing the CA. D.F.G regs I found out that if you fish on a public pier in the bay or on the ocean you don’t need a fishing license. Well that explains why the pier in Pacifica is so crowded all the time. I was under the impression that if you fished on a public or a private pier in the bay you needed a license. Well I guess it pays to read your fishing regs once in a while. Also check out the supplements that come out too. There is a lot of information out there you just have to look for it. This might be a rumor but I heard that your license wont have to be visible any more . Does anyone know if this is true let me know ,I couldn’t find it in the book anywhere.

Don’t forget to visit my You Tube site, just search Grumpus Grange and enjoy.

   Thanks, and SEE YA!

Wish I was Fishing Instead January 13, 2010

13 01 2010

Another day goes by and haven’t gone fishing. That makes it about a week of no fishing. I’m done with Honey Do’s and need to go wet my line. My reels and rods are ready to fish. I’ve got a Chartreuse over White clouser on one and Black over White on the other. I should put on a top water fly on one if they are hitting on the top of the water, something like a Todd’s Wiggle Minnow or a Crease Fly.

I got to pick up my grandson today and he told me he wanted to fish for a giant swordfish and put it in a fish bowl or a huge  Stingray with out the stinger though. He would also like to go in the ocean for flying fish since his grandpa is a fly fisherman. What an imagination, wish mine was as vivid as his.

   Untill then See Ya!

Fishing the Delta Or Not on January 7,2010

7 01 2010

Today is a day that started like yesterday, foggy, cold and dreary. So I stayed home and did a Honey Do. You know what that is? Well if your like me you don’t want to do Honey Do’s. Oh well it’s done and now I can go fish when the weather changes a little.
Did you know that you can get your fishing license online now at the D.F.G site? WeeDoggy! What will they do next. I’ve heard that some people had a problem with the numbers and letters when they enter their driver license number.Make sure it’s either a number ’0′ or a letter ‘O’.
Well until then, See Ya!

Fishing The Delta on January 4,2010 With Grumpus Grange

6 01 2010

Today is Wednesday the 6th and I’m just getting to writing about it. The day started out foggy, cold and dreary but that didn’t stop two fearless fly fishers daring to brave the elements. Yeah well we  wrapped up pretty good so we didn’t brave too much.
Norm Crow and I launched at Lauritsen’s and headed to Dutch Slough and started along the rip rap on the east side and a few minutes later Norm hooked into a 19 inch srtriper, landed and released it. You can see the video on You Tube,I’ll put the link on the bottom of the page.
Went along for another hour or so and headed farther up river and I hooked into a 21 incher. That was the largest for the day. We hooked up four more stripers but hey were all shakers. After about five hours we headed back in to some warmth. The water temp was around 47 degrees and outgoing.
Well untill next time See Ya!

Fly Fishing the Delta with Grumpus Grange January, 2 2010

2 01 2010

Well ready or not the New Year is here. I hope 2010 will be a better year for all of us as the economy starts to make a turn around, we hope!  Have you got your 2010 fishing license yet? I got mine for Christmas.  They did away with the  Delta Bay Enhancement Stamp this year. That saves  you about six bucks ,woo! hoo!…  I haven’t gone out yet this year but plan on going out on Monday the  fourth of  January. Right now it is cold and foggy with a slight breeze blowing.  The last report I read said that there were a few fish to be had, if you could find them, up around Frank’s Tract. The fish were around the small size three to four pounds.

I went to Discovery Bay and fished around for a few hours and there was nothing to be had last week before New Years. We got buzzed by an ultra- light  airplane. That was the most excitement we had all two hours that we went out. The we is my son and I. I’m trying to get him hooked on fly fishing and he is liking it.

Well untill next time , SEE YA!
